There are some known issues with the X51v, like disappearing CF/SD cards, WSOD (white screen of death), and failure to power on.
But that can be overcome:
1. You will want to disable ActiveSync from automatically running:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=112638
2. leave Bluetooth power on all the time (not sure if this is necessary, but I've never had an issue with disappearing CF/SD or WSOD)
A. I like to install most of my programs to the SD card - the SD card is supposedly slightly faster (all things being equal) to a CF card.
But you want to format your SD/CF cards with a third party application:
I used Format Tools, but I think it might only be shareware and not freeware?
Anyway, here's Storage Tools: http://www.download.com/3000-2178-10079054.html
For 1GB or 2GB cards, use FAT32, and uncheck the FAT back-up box.
Then I use the default cluster size (16k or 32k?)
B. In your Windows > Start Up folder you can delete everything (though I save a copy of the Start Up folder to the CF card, so I can put anything back).
I just leave the BT Tray link in the Start Up, and I drag the Wireless.lnk to the Windows/Programs/StartMenu (so it is in my Start Menu, for when I need it) - I don't like the wireless link on my Today screen is all.
C. I recommend installing Magic Button - I install this to the Device (not the SD/CF), and have it run at start up.
You can have a white line up top representing battery level, and you have easy access to running/minimized programs and can close/stop them easily.
But you will need to change the settings of Magic Button:
1. Start Minimize Button - I leave this with the default setting (blank). Then it will just hide/minimize, or close (whatever is the norm for the application in question)
2. I check Auto Start and Battery Status
3. Change Tap and Hold Delay to 200ms. This is IMPORTANT (otherwise, the Connections menu won't close if you open it when MagicButton is on).
D. For file exploring (I install these to the SD card):
I like Total Commander for CE. This also has 3 sweet plugins: LAN access, Registry editor, and FTP

I also like GS Finder for file exploration - it is prettier than TC. Just install them both.

E. For media (I install this to the SD card):
TCPMP rocks!
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download
You want to install TCPMP and then these plugins:
ffmpeg
speex
vorbislq
ac3
aac plugin for TCPMP version 0.66 (they stopped providing the aac plugin because of Microsoft, but the .66 version still works great and can be found on google)
F. Browser (I install this to the Device too):
Use Opera, the new version works great with WM5 - and the native VGA view is really nice (the view is very small, but very nice).

G. Skype: http://www.skype.com/products/skype/pocketpc/
H. Setup:
You can assign the six buttons to whatever you want. I have the side buttons set to the Start Menu and Rotate screen.
The other 4 buttons I assign to a couple of programs (TCPMP and TC), OK/Close, and the Today button (same as "desktop" button on a pc)
I leave the Power button in the default setup. Short Press puts the Axim to sleep, and Long Press dims the backlight. You can use Magic Button to shut down the Axim if you need to. |
